In the AI workshop at the Academy of Design in Münster, where I regularly taught the basics of drawing and sketching we explored the intersection of analog techniques and the amplifying possibilities of GenAI. From stochastic parrots like ChatGPT, which enable fast co-creative (brain) work, to visualization automation with Stable Diffusion, the future of design was discussed hands on in this workshop.
The task was to learn how to use AI image and text generators as a tool for quick moods and sketches, as well as for brainstorming and ideation and the first rough draft and prototype. While doing so the students could observe the potential and shortcomings of the new technology. During this, we also discuss how this emerging field impacts the creative world. Conclusion: Analog and, above all, rapid drawing and sketching will continue to be important in (customer) communication; However, product renderings, visual variations, and exploring material possibilities will increasingly be performed by AI.
